The Shadow
October 4 - December 3, 2007
For the October 4th ArtWalk at Rock|DeMent visual art space, Stephen Rock and Nichole DeMent further their conceptualization of human nature within a contemporary global society
Nichole DeMent uses shadow images in her new body of work to suggest aspects of human nature that are unobserved. Figures of human-like forms characterize various personalities within individuals, as well as cultures, such as the image above left, Monkey King Stealing Immortality, which is based on the Chinese myth of the same name. The installation piece shown above right, House of the Gathering, is an expansion of this body of work and a collaboration with partner, Stephen Rock. The installation art piece is made of a box of white-washed window frames and broken mirrors that encase two images printed on transparent film furthering the metaphor of looking for things that are not easily viewed and the many perspectives in which to view them in.
